8 The South End
Berkeley Street runs from the Back Bay across the Mass. Pike to the most convenient
corner of the sprawling South End, where you'll find these two lodgings.
MODERATE
Chandler Inn Hotel The comfortable Chandler Inn is a bargain for its
location, just 2 blocks from the Back Bay. Long a popular choice with budget travel-
ers, it underwent renovations in 2007 and 2008 that transformed the top three floors
of the eight-story building. Deluxe guest rooms on these boutique floors are decorated
in cool neutrals with splashes of orange; they have plasma TVs and marble bathrooms.
The rest of the hotel was spruced up at the same time; guest rooms and bathrooms are
small, without enough room to squeeze in a cot, but they have individual climate con-
trol and tasteful contemporary-style furniture. The staff is welcoming and helpful.
This gay-friendly hotel books up early for events such as the Marathon and Boston
Pride March and for foliage season.

INEXPENSIVE
YWCA Boston, Berkeley Residence This pleasant, convenient hotel and resi-
dence has a dining room, patio garden, piano, and library. Formerly for women only,
it now accommodates men on one floor of the seven-story building. The dorm-style
guest rooms are basic, containing little more than beds, but they're well maintained
and comfortable—not plush, but not cells, either. The well-kept public areas include
a 24-hour TV lounge. That description might not seem to justify the prices, but check
around a little before you turn up your nose, especially if you plan to spend most of
your time out and about.
