In-Depth Information
Millennium Bostonian Hotel Three brick 19th-century buildings make up
this relatively small hotel, which offers excellent service and features that make it com-
petitive with larger rivals. It's popular with business travelers who want a break from
the convention grind and with vacationers who appreciate the boutique atmosphere
and access to the adjacent spa. A $25-million renovation that reconfigured the public
areas should be complete by the time you visit. The redecorated guest rooms, all cool
neutrals and clean lines, have Frette linens and down comforters on the pillow-top
beds, and separate tubs and showers in the new bathrooms. Rooms vary in size; in half
of them, French doors open onto small private balconies. My favorites overlook Faneuil
Hall Marketplace, which is lively but not noisy, thanks to good soundproofing.

MODERATE
Harborside Inn The Harborside Inn offers an unbeatable combination
of location and value. The renovated 1858 warehouse is across the street from Faneuil
Hall Marketplace, on the edge of the Financial District and less than 2 blocks from
the harbor. The nicely appointed guest rooms, which have queen-size beds and hard-
wood floors, underwent renovations in 2007. Rooms surround a sky-lit atrium; units
on the top floors of the eight-story building have lower ceilings but better views.
Rooms that face out are more expensive but can be noisier; I have a letter here from a
reader who could hear garbage trucks. You can't reserve an interior room, with win-
dows that open only to the atrium, but you can request one at check-in if you're a light
sleeper.

FINANCIAL DISTRICT & DOWNTOWN CROSSING
Besides being great for business travelers, the hotels in this area are closer than their
Waterfront competitors to the major shopping areas and the start of the Freedom
Trail. All offer excellent weekend packages, especially in the winter.
VERY EXPENSIVE
Hilton Boston Financial District Contemporary yet conservative, this meticu-
lously designed hotel delivers 21st-century technology in an Art Deco package. Like
other downtown lodgings, it draws business travelers during the week and leisure trav-
elers on weekends. The 14-story building is near Faneuil Hall Marketplace and the
waterfront, but not all that close (by bratty Bostonian standards) to the T. The spa-
cious guest rooms have 9 1 2 -foot ceilings and cordless two-line phones. The best units,
