Boston Marriott Long Wharf The landmark Marriott occupies an unbeatable
location a stone's throw from the New England Aquarium. It attracts business travel-
ers with its proximity to the Financial District and families with its pool and easy
access to downtown and waterfront attractions. The hotel's terraced brick exterior
encloses a seven-story atrium that gives the public spaces an airy feel. Rooms, which
were renovated in 2008, are large and decorated in upscale-chain-hotel style. They
have cherry furnishings, either one king-size or two double beds (with pillow-top mat-
tresses and down comforters), and a table and chairs in front of the window. Without
any neighbors in the way, the building gets more natural light than any other down-
town hotel. Rooms close to the water afford good views of the wharves and the water-
front; units closer to Atlantic Avenue overlook the Rose Kennedy Greenway.

InterContinental Boston InterContinental broke into the Boston market in
2006, with the luxury brand's first New England hotel. The 22-story glass-sheathed
building (the hotel occupies the bottom 12 floors) faces the Rose Kennedy Greenway,
not far from the Financial District and convention center. It's about half a block from
Boston Harbor, and guest rooms on the east (back) side have lovely water views. All
are decorated in polished contemporary style, with plush earth-tone fabrics and dra-
matic artwork. Rooms are large enough to hold a comfy chaise and oversize work desk,
and bathrooms are huge, with separate tubs and showers. The spa, health club, and
varied dining options (not to mention the condos that share the building) amplify the
residential feel. With over-the-top amenities and helpful service, the InterContinental
brand consistently earns repeat business from its predominantly corporate clientele. At
these prices, I'd expect nothing less.
