Bridge Visitor Center, & 978/369-6993, if there's no answer here) for open days and
hours. For more information, see “Concord,” below.
Start your visit to downtown Lexington at the visitor center, on the town com-
mon, better known as the Battle Green. It's open daily from 9am to 5pm (10am-4pm
Dec-Mar). A diorama and accompanying narrative illustrate the Battle of Lexington.
The Minuteman statue on the Green is of Capt. John Parker, who commanded the
militia. When the British confronted his troops, Parker called: “Stand your ground.
Don't fire unless fired upon, but if they mean to have a war, let it begin here!” Allow
about 30 minutes to look around the visitor center and the Green.
Lexington Historical Society The historical society's signature proper-
ties were among the country's first historic houses when restoration of the three
buildings began around the turn of the 20th century. A guided tour (30-45 min.) is
the only way to see the houses.
Across from the Battle Green is the Buckman Tavern , 1 Bedford St., built
around 1710. If time is short and you have to pick just one house to visit, make it this
one. The interior of the tavern has been restored to approximate its appearance on the
day of the battle. The colonists gathered here to await word of British troop move-
ments, and they brought their wounded here after the conflict. The tour of the tav-
ern, by guides in period dress, is educational and entertaining.
