Shake the Tree Tucked in among the North End's innumerable restaurants is this
appealing boutique. It's artsier than a lot of gift shops, with an ever-changing stock of
handmade jewelry, clothing, handbags, baby presents, home accessories, candles, and
soaps. Closed Sunday in winter. 67 Salem St. & 617/742-0484. www.shakethetreeboston.com.

WardMaps.com A “ward map” shows municipal divisions, usually on a grid and often
bound into an atlas. WardMaps.com is an entrancing little place just outside Harvard
Square. It carries maps and prints in various sizes and conditions, plus an excellent selec-
tion of gift items—coasters, puzzles, mugs, notebooks, and more—printed with (can you
guess?) maps. 12 Bow St., Cambridge. & 617/497-0737. www.wardmaps.com. T: Red Line to Harvard.
HOME & GARDEN
Boutique Fabulous The name, a classic case of truth in advertising, only partly
conveys the fun of exploring this jam-packed emporium of home accessories,
antiques, cosmetics, tableware, memorabilia, greeting cards, vintage fashion, and
(in case this isn't implied) offbeat gifts. A visit to Boutique Fabulous is the perfect after-
dinner treat on a visit to Inman Square—it's open until 10pm Sunday through Friday,
11pm on Sat. 1309 Cambridge St., Cambridge. & 617/864-0656. www.boutiquefabulous.com. T: Red

Crate & Barrel This is wedding-present heaven, packed with contemporary
and classic housewares. The merchandise, from juice glasses and linen napkins to top-
of-the-line knives and roasting pans, includes items to suit any budget. The Boylston
Street location (which also stocks the full line of housewares) and the Mass. Ave. store
carry furniture and home accessories. South Market Building, Faneuil Hall Marketplace.

Diptyque I'm not a candle person, but even I admire the subtly fragrant offerings
at this Parisian outpost. The shop carries other scented products, such as soaps and
room sprays, and other brands, but if you're looking for a hostess gift with off-the-
charts snob appeal, you can't go wrong with a Diptyque candle. 123 Newbury St.
& 617/351-2430. www.diptyqueparis.com. T: Green Line to Copley.
Greenward A quick glance reveals what appears to be an upscale boutique that
may be taking the description “colorful” a bit too literally, but that's part of what
makes Greenward so ingenious. The merchandise—home goods, fashion accessories
(including jewelry), products for cleaning your home and yourself, kids' clothing and
toys, and more—are both desirable and eco-conscious (organic, handmade, recycled,
recyclable, generally virtuous). 1776 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge.

Koo De Kir In the heart of 19th-century Beacon Hill, Koo De Kir is a splash of
modern style. Creative director Kristine Irving has a great eye, and her selection of con-
temporary home accessories, furniture, lighting, sculpture, and gifts at every price
point—from impulse to investment—ranges from classics-to-be to downright whimsi-
cal. 65 Chestnut St. (at Charles St.). & 617/723-8111. www.koodekir.com. T: Red Line to Charles/MGH.
