COLLEGE MERCHANDISE
The big names are BU and Harvard (you'll see Boston College merchandise down-
town, too), but there are so many more insignia to explore. Look like an insider with
a T-shirt from the Emerson College Bookstore, 114 Boylston St. ( & 617/824-8696;
T: Green Line to Boylston); the MIT Coop, 3 Cambridge Center ( & 617/499-3200;
T: Red Line to Kendall/MIT); the Northeastern University Bookstore, 360 Hunt-
ington Ave. ( & 617/373-2286; T: Green Line E to Northeastern); or the Suffolk
University Bookstore, 148 Cambridge St., Beacon Hill ( & 617/227-4085; T: Blue
Line to Bowdoin or Green Line to Government Center).
Barnes & Noble at Boston University The BU crest, terrier mascot, or name
appears on at least a floor's worth of clothing and just about any other item with room
for a logo. The topic selection is huge, and the author series brings writers to campus
year-round. 660 Beacon St. & 617/267-8484. www.bu.bkstore.com. T: Green Line B, C, or D to Kenmore.
The Harvard Coop The Coop (rhymes with hoop ), or Harvard Cooperative
Society, is student-oriented but not a run-of-the-mill college bookstore. You'll find
Harvard insignia merchandise, stationery, prints, and posters. As at BU, Barnes &
Noble runs the topic operation. 1400 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge. &
617/499-2000.

CRAFT GALLERIES
The Artful Hand Gallery The Artful Hand specializes, as you might guess, in
handcrafted items. It sells wonderful work by an excellent roster of artists: jewelry,
ceramics, blown glass, wood pieces (including boxes), and sculpture, plus furniture, folk
art, and books. Copley Place. & 617/262-9601. T: Orange Line to Back Bay or Green Line to Copley.
Society of Arts and Crafts Contemporary American work is the focus at the
oldest nonprofit craft organization in the country. The exquisite jewelry, furniture,
home accessories, glass, ceramics, and fiber art range from practical to purely decora-
tive; the second floor holds a gallery that mounts four shows a year. 175 Newbury St.
& 617/266-1810. www.societyofcrafts.org. T: Green Line to Copley.
CRAFT SUPPLIES
See “Jewelry,” later in this chapter, for information about Beadworks.
Blick Art Materials The extensive selection of art supplies and equipment, plus
teachers' materials and unusual gift items, almost make up for the somewhat incon-
venient location. Prices are higher than at Pearl, the other big national name in this
market, but not bad. In the Landmark Center, 401 Park Dr. & 617/247-3322. www.dickblick.com.
T: Green Line D to Fenway.
Paper Source Gorgeous paper (writing and wrapping), cards, pens, ink, stamps,
