Anthony's Town House Many patrons at this four-story brownstone guesthouse,
a family business since 1944, are Europeans accustomed to homey accommodations
with shared bathrooms, and budget-minded Americans won't be disappointed. Each
floor has three high-ceilinged rooms furnished in Queen Anne or Victorian style and
one bathroom with an enclosed shower. Smaller rooms (one per floor) have twin beds;
the large front units have bay windows. Two family units hold as many as five com-
fortably. Guests have the use of two refrigerators and a microwave, and the staff will
supply a VCR, DVD player, hair dryer, or iron on request. The guesthouse is 1 mile
from Boston's Kenmore Square, about 15 minutes from downtown by T, and 2 blocks
from a busy commercial strip. There's no smoking on the premises.

Longwood Inn In a residential area 3 blocks from the Boston-Brookline border,
this well-kept three-story Victorian guesthouse offers comfortable accommodations at
modest rates. The interior style is homey, with accents that suit the building's archi-
tecture. Rooms were redecorated in 2007, with new furniture and crisp color schemes.
Guests have use of a fully equipped kitchen, a common dining room, and a patio fur-
nished with tables and chairs. The apartment has a private bathroom, kitchen, and
balcony. Tennis courts, a running track, and a playground at the school next door are
open to the public. Public transportation is nearby, and the Longwood Medical Area
and busy Coolidge Corner neighborhood are within easy walking distance.

Across the Charles River from Boston, Cambridge has its own attractions and excel-
lent hotels. Graduation season (May and early June) is especially busy, but campus
events can cause high demand at unexpected times, so plan ahead.
VERY EXPENSIVE
The Charles Hotel This nine-story brick hotel, just a block from Harvard
Square, has been the place for business and leisure travelers to Cambridge since it
opened in 1985. Much of its fame derives from its excellent restaurants, jazz bar, and
day spa; the service is equally impeccable. In the guest rooms, the style is contempo-
rary country, with custom adaptations of early American Shaker furniture. The
already-posh rooms underwent a complete renovation in early 2006. Their austere
design contrasts with the swanky amenities, which include down quilts and Bose
Wave radios; bathrooms contain telephones and TVs (in the mirrors—cool!). And it
