Setting bounds in loose sandy soil such as on a beach can be quite a lot of work
because the sand from the sides of the excavation causes the sides to cave-in as the
hole becomes deeper. In such cases, the top of the hole can become quite large and
a substantial amount of material ends up being removed before the hole achieves
the necessary depth. Digging a hole in wet areas can also be a problem because of
the water running into the hole turning the dirt into mud.
