5.5 A Multivariable Nonlinear Controller for Thermal
Comfort and Indoor Air Quality
5.5.1 Introduction
In previous sections, linear and nonlinear predictive control strategies have been
proposed to maintain, in an efficient way, thermal comfort inside a comfort zone
defined by the PMV index. Nevertheless, users' comfort does not depend exclusively
on thermal conditions. In general, from users' points of view, an environment can be
considered comfortable if it is able to provide both appropriate thermal comfort and
indoor air quality conditions. Therefore, in this section, an extension of the nonlinear
controller presented in Sect. 5.4 has been developed. More specifically, in this case,
users' comfort conditions will be defined as a function of both thermal comfort, and
indoor air quality.
