Power Station in Michigan to treat aqueous borated salts in the early 1980s, but was
abandoned due to poor process efficiency. Advantages of the bituminization process
include:
Relatively low cost of binder material.
Relatively low process temperatures compared with vitrification pro-
cesses. Bitumen is processed at 150 to 230°C, whereas vitrification
requires temperatures in excess of 800°C.
Relatively low leachability due to the impermeable nature of the binder.
The Leachability Index for 137 Cs contained in soluble salts incorporated
in bitumen, determined using the ANSI/ANS-16.1-2003 leach test, was
