charge the same, ranging fr om CI$3 to CI$4 per gallon. The busiest
stations include J ose's S ervice Center acr oss fr om the airpor t

Shopping Village ( & 345/947-3660 ); and Texas 7-Mile Beach Star
Mart at Seven Mile Beach ( & 345/949-0175 ).
By Taxi or Limo Bus
Taxicabs, with drivers who are generally informative and friendly, are
plentiful at the airpor t and in fr ont of the cr uise ship terminals in
George Town. You'll also find them par ked in fr ont of the major
resorts along Seven Mile Beach. For the most part, drivers are among
the most honest you are likely to find in the Caribbean. Shirtless, wet,
or damp passengers are frowned upon and may not be taken at all. I f
you're going out at night, a member of the staff at y our resort will
often call a taxi for y ou. Many cabs can be hir ed for a tour of the
island.
The government sets cab prices and regulates the cabbies, so every
driver should hav e the official go vernment rate sheet. I nform the
driver where you're heading and agree on the fare before getting into
the cab. You may want to ask to see the official rate sheet. I f you're
paying in U.S. dollars, don 't expect the driv er to accept denomina-
tions larger than US$20. Tipping cabbies betw een 15% and 20% is
the local custom.
The island's major taxi companies include Burtons Taxi Service
( & 345/926-8294; www .burtons.ky) and A.A. T ransportation
( & 345/949-7222 ). If you're going to be out late, you'll have to make
advance arrangements with either of these companies for pickup

Contact the companies fr om M onday to F riday betw een 7am and
11pm or S aturday betw een 7am and 6pm to arrange late-night
pickup times.
McCurley's Tours, North Side ( & 345/947-9626 ) provides trans-
port to and fr om the airpor t in air-conditioned limo buses. Elite
Transportation ( & 345/949-5963 ) also arranges airpor t transfers
and personalized sightseeing char ters. It is the only transpor t service
on the island providing wheelchair transportation.
By Bus
Buses are mainly used by islanders going to and from work, although
visitors who hav e endless patience and plenty of time to get ar ound
also take advantage of them. B us service was first launched in 1998,
with a ne w terminal installed adjacent to the P ublic Librar y on
Edward Street in the center of G eorge Town. This terminal serves as
