ETIQUETTE & CUSTOMS You should pay attention to dress codes
in the Cayman I slands, as it still r emains a “ proper” B ritish cr own
colony, and its residents are often conservative in dress and manners.
Avoid wearing bathing suits or scanty beachwear outside a beach area
or cruise ship. Cover up in public areas, especially when walking and
sightseeing on the streets of George Town. There are no nude beaches,
and public nudity, including topless bathing, is strictly pr ohibited by
law. Visitors will want to w ear smar t casual tr opical r esort w ear at
most restaurants. When attending chur ch, “Sunday dress” is appr o-
priate—that is, no shor ts or T-shirts. M en don't hav e to w ear ties,
however. Avoid profanity in public—it is extremely frowned upon.
For business attir e, concessions ar e made for the local climate.
Open collars, white trousers, knit shirts, and blazers are, to an increas-
ing degree, appropriate for business meetings. Punctuality is appreci-
ated, even if the temptation exists for a mor e relaxed observation of
“island time.” Don't be surprised if some of the meeting planners sug-
gest a fishing or snorkeling trip on a private boat.

Heroes' D ay ( Jan 27), Ash Wednesday (Feb or M ar), G ood Friday

INSURANCE For information on traveler's insurance, trip cancel-
lation insurance, and medical insurance while trav eling, please visit
www.frommers.com/planning . In general, if y ou can affor d it, w e
always r ecommend that visitors take out trav el insurance. F or the
most part, the Caymans are a safe destination. H owever, they attract
thousands of scuba divers and, in spite of safety precautions, accidents
do occur. Even if you're an adventurous traveler, any number of things
can go wrong on a trip—lost luggage, trip cancellation, or a medical
emergency, so consider the insurance for added pr otection.
