ABSTRACT
The main concepts of soil classiÝcation in Russia advanced during the last centuries are
analyzed. The early classiÝcation systems, the different approaches to soil classiÝcation, the ofÝcial
classiÝcation of soils of the Soviet Union, and the new classiÝcation of Russian soils that is based
on the proÝle-genetic concept are elucidated. The prospects of the Russian soil classiÝcation
development are discussed.
INTRODUCTION
During the life of Dokuchaev, the founding father of modern Pedology in Russia, the problem
of soil classiÝcation has received considerable attention and become an important component of
scientiÝc research. Soil classiÝcation presents a state-of-the-art of soil science, with results from
