sundaes and knickerbocker glories. Oystermouth Castle stands guard over the area
amid beautiful parkland. The park and woodland walks are open year-round while the
castle, owned by the council (www.swansea.gov.uk), opens sporadically during the
summer. On the way here you'll also find Clyne Gardens (daily, dawn to dusk with
free admission), a park known for its rhododendron displays.
National Botanic Garden of Wales
GARDEN This is a garden that is grow-
ing into itself; it only opened in 2000, transforming a 229-hectare (568-acre) Regency
estate into a treasure trove of flowers and wildlife at a cost of £45 million. At its heart
is a Great Glasshouse, the largest single-span greenhouse in the world, blending in
naturally with the rolling Tywi Valley. It has the best collection of Mediterranean
climate zone plants in the northern hemisphere. It's a full day out for visitors; after
exploring the themed gardens you can stroll among the lakes, streams, marsh, semi-
natural woodland, and meadows. The garden is 20 miles northwest of Swansea.
