on the coast, on a rocky headland, Tynemouth Castle and Priory ( &   0870/333-
1181; www.english-heritage.org.uk) is home to an interactive “Life in the Strong-
hold” exhibition about this site from its origins as an Anglo-Saxon settlement through
its roles as an Anglican monastery, royal castle, artillery fort, and coastal defense. It's
open daily 10am to 5pm in summer, to 4pm in winter, and costs £4.20 adults, £2.10
children 5 to 16.
Having grown from a Roman fort into a major port, Newcastle was a key player in
the Industrial Revolution, after which, like many such places, it fell into a long
decline. Part of its reawakening has come in the form of science—as well as a science
fest (see “Special Events,” above), it's home to the Centre for Life (see below) and
the nearby Discovery Museum. A short walk north, by the university, the Great
North Museum , Barras Bridge ( &   0191/222-6765; www.twmuseums.org.uk),
opened in 2006 to bring together several pre-existing local collections in one £26-mil-
lion museum. Highlights are the large-scale, interactive model of Hadrian's Wall
(p. 669), and the interactive “Living Planet” gallery, with some live-animal tanks and
aquariums.
