COUNTY DURHAM
Durham: 270 miles N of London; 75 miles N of York; 140 miles S of Edinburgh
The countryside and coast around the famous—and exceedingly pleasant—university
city of Durham don't get as many visitors as they deserve, eclipsed as they are by the
close proximity of Yorkshire to the south and Northumberland to the north. The roll-
ing hills and waterfalls of the Durham Dales in the North Pennines are particularly
worthy of exploration, while the fascinating layers of local history are kept vividly alive
at outstanding attractions such as the North of England Lead Mining Museum
and Beamish, the Living Museum of the North.
