Ate O Clock INTERNATIONAL As quirky as its name suggests, with a decor
including clocks set to 8 o'clock, this laid-back restaurant on an alley in central York
claims to offer Mediterrean-style dishes “with a twist of Scouse,” but its influences
are more international in scope. The wide-ranging menu embraces everything from
sandwiches (from Yorkshire rump steak to hot smoked duck with mango chutney),
omelets, risottos, burgers, and steaks, to the likes of terrine of smoked salmon with a
rye bread and wasabi peanut-butter sandwich, or pork filet filled with black pudding
and apple, cider-braised red cabbage, and celeriac purée. You can have lunch or pre-
or post-dinner drinks or coffee on the heated patio.

Bettys Café Tea Rooms ENGLISH TEA/CONTINENTAL Don't come
to Harrogate without paying at least one visit to the institution that is Bettys (if it's
good enough for the Queen…). You can pre-book afternoon tea in the Imperial Room
at weekends, served on silver cakestands and accompanied by a classical pianist;
otherwise, you have to get in line for the pleasure of choosing from more than 300
breads, cakes, and chocolates, and about 50 teas and coffees, in the more informal
cafe. Part of this, the Montpellier Café Bar, also offers all-day dining, incluing lunch-
time open sandwiches and filled rolls, and dinner sharing plates, light meals, and
main courses such as oak-smoked salmon rösti. The kids' menu bears such treats as
macaroni, toasted sandwiches, and ice-cream shakes.
There are additional Tea Rooms at Harlow Carr Gardens (p. 646) and in York (two
branches), Ilkley (west of Harrogate), and Northallerton (north of Thirsk).

The Magpie Café SEAFOOD Folks flock from far and wide for the tradi-
tional fish and chips served in this old-fashioned restaurant on Whitby's harbor, with
unforgettable views up to the famous abbey. The rest of the menu is almost a distrac-
tion, but repeated visits may tempt you to investigate the offerings more fully—
Whitby crab and kipper starters, sautéed local squid, seafood chowder, oysters from
Lindisfarne (p. 671), or any of the daily fish specials are good starting points. Kids get
a separate and almost equally vast menu. Fish and chips and many other dishes come
in two sizes; order the smallest if you want any chance of tackling a dessert. Limited
bookings are taken and you may have to wait for a table—if it's good weather, get a
takeout and eat on the quay-side instead.
