Fleece Inn & Restaurant TRADITIONAL BRITISH This super-cozy pub
and B&B on the cobbled main street of Howarth counts Branwell Brontë—brother
to the famous writers—among its former patrons. You can still rely on it for a true
Yorkshire welcome in the company of locals supping award-winning regional cask ales
in the stone-flagged bar with its open fire. The relaxed restaurant area is the place to
enjoy simple, hearty dishes such as pan-fried bacon and black pudding with apple
sauce, or giant Yorkshire pudding filled with sausage, creamy mash, and onion gravy,
and splendidly calorific desserts including moist ginger pudding. There's a good-value
kids' menu (£4.95 for a main course), a rooftop beer garden with scenic views, and
live entertainment most weekends. Bedrooms (£65-£85), all en suite, are clean and
handsomely furnished with local pine furniture.

A Nation of Shopkeepers INTERNATIONAL This bohemian bar/restau-
rant in central Leeds offers good-value eats amid thrift-store decor and twinkling
fairylights. A wide range of tastes/moods are catered for on the menu with its tradi-
tional and veggie breakfast fry-ups, snacky sharing platters featuring the likes of
shrimp popcorn and lemon-chicken skewers, globally inspired sandwiches and salads,
and comfort-food classics (macaroni and cheese; local pies with mash, peas, and
gravy; beer-battered fish and chips; and handmade “Boutique Burgers” in sourdough
buns). Sundays see roasts, music, board games, and free newspapers. A courtyard
with heaters lets you sit outside in most weather. Late evenings see DJs, while music
quizzes, arts and crafts, and the like keep things lively.

Karachi PAKISTANI Selected by chef Rick Stein, in his “Food Heroes” TV
series, as the best curry house in all Yorkshire, and held by some to be the best in the
U.K., this Bradford canteen has for several decades been making up in flavor (and
great value) what it lacks in chic. Pass over the gimmicky (meatball curry, kebab
sandwiches) in favor of tried-and-tested classics including an incredible chicken jal-
frezi, lamb karahi, and—Stein's favorite, now a signature dish—chicken-and-spinach
karahi. Service is brusque, decor shabby, and the location unprepossessing, but with
food like this (overseen by the same head chef for more than 35 years), you really
won't care. Bring your own alcohol, and ask for cutlery if you need it—most custom-
ers scoop their curries with chapattis.
15-17 Neal St., Bradford. &   01274/732015. Main courses £2.90-£5.95. Mon-Thurs 11am-1am, Fri-Sat
11am-2am.
Shopping
Leeds is shopping central—many people head here to do nothing but that. On the
central shopping street of Briggate you'll find several department and high-end
fashion stores, including the first Harvey Nichols branch outside London
