In the northern Peak District, the walkers' paradise of Hathersage is home to the

iconic designer and his son Corin, plus other local crafts. Inside the Round Building,
an award-winning factory, you can watch some of Mellor's cutlery being made, and
there's a stunning on-site cafe serving local produce.

The Chateau & Wye House Suites A flexible option for anyone looking
for a base in lively Buxton, these one-, two-, and three-bedroomed apartments occupy
an impressive historic building (The Chateau) and two modern outbuildings in wood-
land and grounds with fountains. The quite chic, modern decor rivals that of many a
boutique hotel, and luxuries include underfloor heating and Jacuzzi-style baths. Some
apartments have a balcony and/or a small garden area. A minimum 2-night stay
applies at weekends. Insider tip: Guests get discounts on some shows at the Opera
House, about a 10-minute walk away (downhill).

Manifold Farm If Chatsworth House is the “jewel in the crown” of the
Peak District, where better to holiday in the region than a traditional holiday cottage
on one of its estates? All cottages are comfortable and cosy rather than luxurious—
exactly right for walkers, dog-owners, and families. Of a total of 17 cottages, Mani-
fold, a former dairy farm south of Matlock, accounts for five. An attractive complex
of stone buildings set around a courtyard, they sleep 2 to 10 guests. All but one has
a log-burning stove, and each has its own garden. There's also a shared games room.
For those who wish to explore, there's a network of footpaths on the doorstep, Cars-
ington Water only 4 miles away, and Chatsworth House, within a 20-minute drive
(weekly guests get free tickets). A fresh-baked farmhouse Victoria spongecake and
tea-tray greet your arrival at your cottage.
Other options on Chatsworth's estates include Swiss Cottage, on a hill behind
Chatsworth House, overlooking its own lake (it sleeps up to six), and the 16th-century
Hunting Tower, on an escarpment also just above the House, sleeping four plus two
in a stone annex. There are also four hotels/pubs with rooms on the estate, includ-
ing the Devonshire Arms at Beeley (p. 540).
Shottle, Derbyshire DE56 2DX. www.chatsworth.org. &   01246/565379. 5 units. £440-£586/week cot-

Rivendale Leisure Park In a disused quarry amid stunning countryside
with easy access to the “Trails Triangle” formed by the Tissington Trail (p. 535), High
Peak Trail, and the cycleway around Carsington Water, this is a good budget and eco-
friendly base for cyclists and walkers, who can relieve muscle strain in the wood-fired
