Where to Eat & Stay
Montague House In the quiet backstreets of Sheringham, this boutique
B&B occupies a smart Edwardian house, packed with the owners' collection of art
and antiques (including many large oils, old and modern), with the steam engines of
the Poppy Line passing by the bottom of the pretty garden. The three bedrooms are
all furnished individually, right down to the varied organic toiletries and truffles from
local producers. The Gold Suite has a four-poster bed and all have flat-screen TVs.
The country house-style breakfast room spills out onto a terrace, and doubles as a
lounge and games room. Breakfasts cooked on the Aga are sensational, ranging from
organic bacon to locally smoked kippers and haddock to blueberry pancakes and
French toast. Picnic baskets and packed lunches are made to order.

Titchwell Manor This old farmhouse has expanded into various outbuildings
and is now one of the region's leading small hotels, with views across the RSPB
Titchwell Marsh bird sanctuary to the sea. Rooms are all unique, from sumptuous
conventional hotel rooms to the flagstones and modish decor of the timbered Herb
Garden lodges, or the Victorian fittings and wood-burning stove in The Lounge, a
cottage-like original room. All have lavish bathrooms, and foldaway beds for children
are available (£15). In the hotel's public rooms there's a lounge with an open fire, and
the Conservatory restaurant, overlooking the walled garden, features a modern
menu with local produce such as venison from the Houghton estate and Brancaster
oysters. The more informal Eating Rooms, with sea-view terrace, has a brasserie
menu. There's also a good, friendly bar.

Victoria at Holkham This former pub on the Holkham estate (still home
to Viscount Coke and family) is now a country chic hotel where Range Rovers dis-
gorge panting Labradors, and smartly casual families flop down for a weekend in the
wilds. Yet the polished Victorian interior has a colonial feel, full of stirring rugs and
furniture imported especially from India. All the rooms are different, united by their
exotic fabrics, richly shaded walls, and elegant bathrooms (some with rolltop baths);
the Attic suite is great for families. The restaurant offers a rich menu, with beef,
venison, and game from the Holkham estate. Outside, a stroll in one direction gets
you into the Holkham parkland and the stately home (open to the public), in the
other to the pine-fringed beach.
