Where to Eat
Escape the crowds at The Almonry Restaurant & Tea Rooms, in The College,
Ely Cathedral, High Street ( &   01353/666360; www.elycathedral.org). Not only is
the setting peaceful (a 12th-century undercroft with a garden for summer dining) but
the home-cooked lunches and afternoon teas are excellent. Lunch starts at around
£11. It's open Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm and Sunday 11am to 5pm.
Boathouse BRITISH/CONTINENTAL This is the best gastropub-cum-
restaurant in town, housed in a converted boathouse that opens onto the Great
Ouse, 10 minutes' walk from the city's heart. The menu is seasonal and ingredients
are locally sourced; for instance, co-owner Richard Bradley's home-produced sau-
sages are made from Gloucestershire Old Spot pork. There's a set lunch on week-
days with starters including pigeon and black-pudding salad, and main courses
such as steamed steak and kidney pudding. Evening meals and Sunday lunches are
chosen from an individually priced menu.

Old Fire Engine House BRITISH This converted fire station with a walled
garden and art gallery is near Oliver Cromwell's House. The menu is British farm-
house, with dishes such as seasonal soups served with crusty bread. Main dishes
include rabbit with prunes and bacon, while afternoon tea (£16) is a selection of
finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream, and homemade jam followed by home-
made cakes and pastries. In summer you can dine in the garden.

Where to Stay
Lamb Hotel This coaching inn was known as The Holy Lambe in the 1400s by
pilgrims visiting the cathedral, across the street. Today the Lamb is beautifully deco-
rated (rich-hued walls and wooden floors), with traditionally furnished rooms with
modern comforts and big polished wood beds. The restaurant (main courses
£7.50-£15) has a selection of steaks, including a 14-oz. bone-in rib, and there's lots
of use of Colman's mustard, which is made in the region. The bar is warm and comfy.
