VISITOR INFORMATION For free information on attractions and public trans-
port visit the Cambridge Tourist Information Centre, Peas Hill, CB2 3AD
( &   0871/226-8006, or 0044/122-346-4732 from overseas; www.visitcambridge.
org). Staff can also book tours and lodging. The center is open year-round, Monday
to Saturday 10am to 5pm (Apr-Nov also Sun and bank holidays 11am-3pm).
GETTING AROUND City parking is expensive and the traffic can be unbearable.
There are five Park and Ride sites, at Trumpington, Madingley Road, Milton, New-
market Road, and Babraham Road. Park and Ride round-trip bus tickets cost £2.30
from machines (£2.60 from bus drivers); children ride free. Buses leave every 10
minutes (every 15 min. on Sun and bank holidays) and call at a number of stops
around the city.
Cambridge is best seen on foot, or you can join the locals and cycle everywhere.
Station Cycles ( &   01223/307125; www.stationcycles.co.uk) has bikes for rent for
£8 for a half-day, £10 for a day, or £25 for a week. A £75 deposit is required. There's
a shop in the railway station parking lot and at Grand Arcade in Corn Exchange Street
near the market. Both are open Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm (7pm on Wed), Sat-
urday 9am to 5pm, and Sunday 10am to 4pm, and they have left-luggage facilities.
Park your bike for free at the Park Street or Grand Arcade car parks. A free pushchair
loan is available to cycling parents with children on bicycle seats, from Park Street
and Station Cycle's station car park shop. City Cycle Hire in Newnham Road
( &   01223/365629; www.citycyclehire.com) also has bikes for £6 per half-day, £9
per day, or £17 per week.
Stagecoach ( &   01223/423578; www.stagecoachbus.com) serves the area with
a network of buses. A day pass costs from £3.40, or £5.70 for a family day pass. The
tourist office has bus schedules.
SPECIAL EVENTS Try to coincide your visit with one of the city's many festivals.
Cambridge Folk Festival (www.cambridgefolkfestival.co.uk) in the last weekend of
July is the best known, but sells out quickly. Full weekend tickets are about £110. Alter-
natively, try Strawberry Fair (www.strawberry-fair.org.uk) on Midsummer Common in
June to see local bands, cabaret, dance, and family entertainment. The Cambridge
Shakespeare Festival ( &   07955/218824; www.cambridgeshakespeare.com) in July
and August has open-air Shakespeare performances in the grounds of several colleges.
ORGANIZED TOURS The Cambridge Tourist Information Centre (see
“Visitor Information,” above) has several 2-hour walking tours of the city, from £8 to
£15 for adults, and up to £7 for children under 12. Book tours by calling &   01223/

City Sightseeing ( &   01223/423578; www.city-sightseeing.com) uses open-
top, double-decker buses from outside Cambridge railway station, and has 20 hop-on,
hop-off stops. Daily tours with recorded commentary depart every 20 minutes from
Silver Street near The Backs, between 9:30am and 4pm in summer and 10:20am to
3pm in winter. Tickets are valid for 24 hours, and the tour is a convenient way to get
to out-of-town attractions such as the American Cemetery, and those on the outskirts
(Cambridge Folk Museum and Cambridge University Botanic Gardens). The fare is
£13 for adults, £9 for seniors and students, £7 for children 6 to 15, and free for chil-
dren 5 and under. A family ticket for £32 covers two adults and up to three children.
City walking tours with Cambridge Tailor-made Tours ( &   01223/561766;
www.cambridgetmtours.co.uk) are available for small or large groups and are led by
Blue Badge guides. Prices depend on the size of the group.
