A Side Trip from Broadway:
Chipping Campden
Chipping Campden epitomizes the dreamy English village that you've seen depicted
in a thousand postcards. Except for the heavy traffic in summer, the long High
Street still looks as it did centuries ago and it's lined with stone houses dating from
the 16th century. One of the most arresting buildings along here is the arched Mar-
ket Hall, erected in 1627 to provide shelter for the local produce market.
The village landmark is the soaring tower of the Church of St. James ( &   01386/
841927; www.stjameschurchcampden.co.uk; free admission, suggested donation
£1). You'll see it for miles around. Constructed mostly in the Perpendicular style over
250 years from 1260, it is one of the finest churches in the Cotswolds. The church
is open March to October Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm, and Sundays 2 to 6pm
(Nov and Feb Mon-Sat 11am-4pm, Sun 2-4pm; Dec-Jan Mon-Sat 11am-3pm,
Sun 2-3pm).
The Court Barn Museum ( &   01386/841951; www.courtbarn.org.uk), next to
the church, celebrates the rich Arts and Crafts heritage of the area. C. R. Ashbee
brought the Guild of Handicraft to Chipping Campden in 1902, and though it closed
6 years later, a tradition of craftsmanship remained in the village. The museum opens
April to September Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 5pm (Oct-Mar 10am-4pm). Admis-
sion is £4 for adults and £3.25 for students and seniors (free for children 15 and
under).
The Old Silk Mill, Sheep Street (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm, Sat 9am-noon), is where
the Guild of Handicraft was actually established in 1902. Today it has been revived
with a series of craft workshops. One of them is Hart Gold & Silversmiths
( &   01386/841100; www.hartsilversmiths.co.uk), where silver and gold is expertly
smithed by descendants of George Hart (born in the 1890s), an original member of
the Guild of Handicraft.
Elsewhere, the Robert Welch Studio Shop, Lower High Street ( &   01386/
840522; www.welch.co.uk), is where the Welch family has been crafting silverware,
stainless steel, and cutlery for more than 50 years. The shop is open Monday to Sat-
urday 9:30am to 5:30pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm.
If antiques and antiques-hunting are your passion, visit School House Antiques,
High Street ( &   01386/841474; www.schoolhouseantiques.co.uk). For new, sec-
ondhand, and antiquarian books, look up Draycott Books, 2 Sheep St. ( &   01386/
841392 ).
The Tourist Information Centre is at the Old Police Station, High Street
( &   01386/841206; www.chippingcampdenonline.org). It's open daily 10am to
5:30pm in summer, and 10am to 1pm in the off season.
WHERE TO EAT & STAY
The Cotswold House Hotel This stately, formal Regency house, dating
from 1800 and situated opposite the old wool market, is the best place to stay in the
village. The four cottage bedrooms tucked away in the garden are more secluded and
