iced mousse. The downside? It's expensive (of course), and the decor is a bit dull
considering the quality of the food.

Shopping
Start in the Montpellier quarter for individual boutiques, crafts, and specialty
shops. The Courtyard, on Montpellier Street in the heart of the quarter, is an award-
winning shopping mall that offers a blend of shops specializing in fashion, furniture,
and gift items. A good mix of restaurants, cafes, and wine bars rounds out the mall.
From Montpellier, continue to the nearby Suffolk quarter to find most of Chel-
tenham's antiques stores, as well as a growing number of artisan jewelers, clothes and
accessories, rugs, and prints shops.
An enjoyable short stroll to the Promenade takes you by stores featuring clothing
and shoes, as well as several bookstores. Cavendish House, on the Promenade
( &   01242/521300 ), has been a department store since 1823, and is now part of the
House of Fraser group.
From the Promenade, take Regent Street to High Street, which is mostly pedes-
trian-only, and you'll find several brand-name department stores in the Beechwood
Shopping Centre.
The weekly market is in the Henrietta Street parking lot on Thursday (9am-
2pm), while a Farmers' Market is held on the second and last Friday of the month
on the Promenade (9am-3pm).
Entertainment & Nightlife
The major venue for entertainment is the Everyman Theatre, Regent Street
( &   01242/572573; www.everymantheatre.org.uk). Designed in the 1890s, the
theatre attracts some of England's top dramatic companies with a program of Shake-
speare, musicals, comedies, and other genres. Tickets range from £7.50 to £55,
depending on the event.
You'll find more theatre at the Playhouse, Bath Road ( &   01242/522852; www.
playhousecheltenham.org), which often presents new local, amateur productions of
drama, comedy, dance, and opera staged every 2 weeks. Tickets usually run from £12
to £35.
THE PUB & BAR SCENE
The Beehive, 1-3 Montpellier Villas ( &   01242/702270; www.thebeehive
montpellier.com), is an award-winning pub known for its fine local ales (including
Battledown Brewery), Thatchers ciders, board games, a superb upstairs restaurant,
and courtyard garden. The pub is open daily noon to midnight.
For something a little more sophisticated, the Montpellier Wine Bar, Bayshill
Lodge, Montpellier Street ( &   01242/527774; www.montpellierwinebar.com),
offers alfresco dining and a decent selection of wines by the glass (open daily 10am-
11pm).
Subtone, 117 Promenade ( &   01242/575925; www.subtone.co.uk), is Chelten-
ham's most popular nightclub and live music venue, with a host of visiting DJs and
bands from around the globe (open Thurs-Sat 9pm-3 or 5am; cover £2-£7).
