In-Depth Information
Once a Roman settlement, the site was a trading post of Celtic kings in the 6th
century, while the ruins of the castle that you see today date back to 1233. Essentially
built in two sections, they stand high above the sea on a rocky promontory; to get to
them you must take a steep walk from the parking area and ascend 100 rock-cut
steps. You can also visit Merlin's Cave at low tide. The Arthurian legend continues to
fascinate—in 1998, excavations uncovered a 1,500-year-old inscribed slate saying
that “Artognau” had this made.
