Making Yourself at Home: Self-Catering in Cornwall
Self-catering has long been a popular
way to experience the charms of Corn-
wall. It can save money (especially if
there are several of you, or you wish to
stay for more than a few nights), and
you also have the freedom of catering
for yourself. Options include renting a
small apartment (often on a farm), tak-
ing a traditional cottage (these may
sleep from 2 to 10 people), and staying
in more modern purpose residences.

ST. AUSTELL TO THE
LIZARD
St. Mawes: 300 miles SW of London, 2 miles E of Falmouth, 18 miles S of Truro
This sheltered stretch of coastline is characterized by its sleepy, wooded estuaries;
subtropical plants; and secret, sandy coves—no wonder it was once prime smuggling
country. It's a great area for sailing, boating, and walking. Overlooking the mouth of
the Fal River, at the tip of the Roseland Peninsula,
St. Mawes
is one of Cornwall's
prettiest villages.
The Lizard
Peninsula
is the U.K. mainland's most southerly point
and home to Frenchman's Creek, inspiration for Daphne du Maurier's novel. Corn-
wall's best-known attractions are here, too, such as the futuristic
Eden Project
near
St. Austell, the glorious
Lost Gardens of Heligan,
and the
National Maritime
Museum
in Falmouth. And then there's
Truro,
the county town of Cornwall and its
best shopping center.
