POLPERRO
The Blue Peter Inn BRITISH/SEAFOOD This lovely, friendly pub,
perched beside the harbor in Polperro, was once two fishermen's cottages. The atmo-
spheric interior reflects its 600-year history, and there's a real fire in the bar on chilly
winter days. The menu changes daily and features fresh-caught fish such as sardines,
mackerel, or scallops. However, some dishes are suitable for vegetarians and there's a
good selection of soups and sandwiches, too. There's often live music on Friday and
Saturday evenings.

The Kitchen BRITISH This pink cottage, halfway to the harbor from the parking
area, was once a wagon-builder's shop. It's now a tearoom/restaurant offering good
English cooking, all homemade from fresh ingredients. The menu features local,
seasonal produce and on Sunday a traditional roast is served. Typical dishes include
smoked fish platter or steak with salad. Breakfast is served until 11:30am, and there
are cream teas and cakes in the afternoon.

Nelson's Restaurant SEAFOOD Nelson's features succulent preparations of
regional fish and shellfish that arrive fresh from local fishing boats. The menu
changes daily but usually includes fresh crab, Dover sole, lobster, and many other
exotic fish. Fresh meat, poultry, and game, all from local suppliers, are also available
and beautifully prepared. A lower deck features a cafe/bar and bistro.

Shopping
Polperro is good for works by Cornish artists (the Polperro Gallery especially;
&   01503/272577; www.polperrogallery.co.uk) as well as antiques, while East Looe
has plenty of individual shops. Check out Purely Cornish, Fore Street
( &   01503/262680; www.purelycornish.co.uk) for local food, drink, and hampers,
and the Pasty Shop, on Buller Street, for freshly made pasties. Fowey has a couple
of good bookstores, with plenty of Daphne du Maurier titles. Watts Trading, Fore
Street ( &   01208/872304; www.wattstrading.co.uk) in Lostwithiel, is devoted to
organic items with everything from woolens to wooden toys. Lostwithiel is a good
center for antiques, too. Cider lovers should call into Cornish Orchards
( &   01503/269007; www.cornishorchards.co.uk), Westnorth Manor Farm, Duloe,
near Looe, to visit the farm shop and purchase fresh cider and apple juice.
Entertainment & Nightlife
The Daphne du Maurier Festival (www.dumaurierfestival.co.uk) takes place for
one week each May in Fowey. The program usually features a mix of talks and read-
ings by authors, as well as musical performances. Fowey pubs to check out include
the Galleon Inn, 12 Fore St. ( &   01726/833014; www.galleon-inn.com), which
often has live music on Friday nights, and Safe Harbour on Lostwithiel Street
( &   01726/833379; www.cornwall-safeharbour.co.uk), which serves local ales.
