TOTNES
224 miles SW of London; 12 miles NW of Dartmouth
A hilly castle town on the banks of the River Dart, Totnes rests quietly in the past.
This is a charming place where you always seem to be walking either up or down a
steep hill. Its cobbled streets are lined with Elizabethan and Tudor buildings, as
well as one of the original city gates through which visitors have passed since the
Middle Ages. The town centers on the dramatic ruins of a Norman castle, an
ancient guildhall, and the 15th-century Church of St. Mary.
