Essentials
GETTING THERE You really need a car to get around the moors, particularly in
the winter. In the summer, the Transmoor Link bus service runs between the vil-
lages on the moor and surrounding towns. For timetables, contact Travel Line
( &   0871/200-2233; www.traveline.info).
If you're driving from Exeter, head
west on the B3212 to such centers as
Dartmoor, Chagford, Moretonhamp-
stead, and North Bovey. From these
smaller towns, tiny roads—often not
really big enough for two cars—cut
deeper into the moor. Old signposts
list the names of towns on these roads,
which are too small to be numbered.
Prepare to pull over if traffic comes
the other way.
Inspiring Sherlock Holmes
The High Moorland Visitors Centre sits
inside an impressive 19th-century build-
ing. Two centuries ago, the building
was The Old Duchy Hotel. Arthur Conan
Doyle stayed there while researching
The Hound of the Baskervilles . So the
view from the center, down the wind-
swept hill, is the view that inspired his
descriptions of the desolate moor.
