Schwartz Brothers Hamburgers FAST FOOD This gourmet-burger bar has
been cooking up the region's finest hamburgers since 1977. Prime cuts of beef are
chargrilled and served with fresh salad in a tempting range of varieties. Favorites
include the garlic mayoburger and an irresistible Danish blue-cheese burger. They
also do a large selection of decent veggie burgers. It tends to get busy after the pubs
shut. Take-out only.

Seafoods Traditional Fish & Chips FISH & CHIPS This family-owned
shop has been serving this English fast-food staple for over 50 years, with cod, had-
dock, and plaice fried in a traditional, crispy batter and served with real thick-cut
chips. They also do battered sausages, pies, mushy peas, fishcakes (cod, potatoes, and
parsley), scampi, and even an extremely rich “posh” fish and chips (salmon). Take-out
or grab a small table inside.

Yak Yeti Yak NEPALESE At this enticing Nepali basement restaurant you
can eat exceedingly well for under £12, from a menu that includes subtly spiced
dishes such as lamb slow-cooked with bamboo shoots, black-eyed peas and potato, or
marinated chicken stir-fried with peppers and fresh chili. It's especially interesting for
vegetarians, with superb Aloo Channa (potato and chickpeas stir-fried with cumin)
and some of the best black dhal in the region.

Shopping
Bath is crammed with markets, antiques centers, and shops. Prices here, however,
are comparable to London's. Head to Milsom Street for old-fashioned department
store Jolly's ( &   0844/800-3704; www.houseoffraser.co.uk; Mon-Thurs 9:30am-

House of Fraser chain. Or go along the Corridor and North and South Passages,
where you can pick up Walcot Street, home of arty, independent stores, including
The Fine Cheese Co. (see above, under “Where to Eat”), which sells a vast array
of artisan British cheeses.
The Bartlett Street Antiques Centre, 5 Bartlett St. ( & 01225/466689; Mon-
Tues and Thurs-Sat 9:30am-5pm, Wed 8am-5pm), comprises 60 stands displaying
furniture, silver, antique jewelry, paintings, toys, military items, and collectibles.
Near Bath Abbey, the Beaux Arts Gallery, 12-13 York St. ( &   01225/464850;
www.beauxartsbath.co.uk; Mon-Sat 10am-5pm), is the largest and most important
gallery of contemporary art in Bath, specializing in well-known British artists such as
Ray Richardson, John Bellany, and Nicola Bealing.

home-decor items. It'll ship anywhere in the world. The Sausage Shop, 7 Green St.

equally varied selection of natural, homemade bangers in over 30 varieties, from Bath
