accession to the throne. It was later gifted to Sir Walter Raleigh by Queen Elizabeth
I. The buildings were mostly destroyed in the aftermath of the English Civil Wars,
when it was beseiged twice, but three gatehouses, some graceful arcades, and a
barrel-vaulted undercroft remain.

The Conservatory FRENCH/ENGLISH In a tasteful setting inside the
recommended Eastbury Hotel (see below), this award-winning restaurant offers the
best formal dining in town—and some of the finest cooking in Dorset. Dishes are
always based on the freshest available ingredients and constructed with an imagina-
tive, intellectual use of flavors. Start with such delights as ballotine of locally shot
rabbit, followed by main courses like pan-fried mullet with ragout of New Forest
mushrooms. The cuisine is enhanced by a fine wine list. The same kitchen prepares
an alternative bistro menu, available at lunch and dinner year-round, and featuring
simpler, classic gastropub fare.

Queens Arms GASTROPUB This contemporary take on a Georgian country
inn comes complete with a roaring fireplace, flagstone floors, a relaxing beer garden,
and modern food and drink menus that make full use of the rural bounty on the
doorstep. Perch on chunky wooden benches to enjoy the likes of homemade crab and
hake fishcakes with tomato and basil dressing, or classic boiled ham served with
parsley sauce and bubble and squeak. There's a fine selection of local draft ales,
bottled beers, and even a separate cider and apple-juice list.
Cozy, traditionally decorated guest rooms are upstairs. Room no. 2 is the standout
with its antique French bed and vast, romantic cast-iron tub. Rates range from £80
to £95 for a double.
