The Perpendicular Gothic nave, with its two aisles, is the architectural highlight.
The elaborately carved choir stalls from 1308 are England's oldest, as is the retro-
choir's medieval tiled floor. The astonishing Great Screen was carved between 1470
and 1490, although the original statues fell victim to the iconoclasm of the Reforma-
tion years. Those in place today are Victorian replacements.
Jane Austen is buried in the north aisle; note how her original gravestone makes
no mention of her writing. The son of William the Conqueror, William Rufus (who
reigned as William II), is also buried at the cathedral, as are the bones of Danish King
of England, Cnut (985-1035).

Winchester College HISTORIC SITE Winchester College was founded by
William of Wykeham, Bishop of Winchester and chancellor to Richard II, who also
founded New College, Oxford. Its buildings have been in use since 1393, making it
the oldest continuously open school in England. Exploration is possible only by
guided tour, lasting an hour and covering the Chamber Court, the 14th-century
