MODERATE
Barceló Brighton Old Ship Hotel
An inn in 1559, this seafront hotel has its
place in history: It hosted the Prince Regent's Ball in 1819, a Paganini violin recital
in 1831, and the banquet celebrating the opening of the London to Brighton Railway
in 1841. The largely Victorian rebuild is now a boutique affair and the rooms are
pleasing in a contemporary-traditional way. A limited number have sea views. The
Location 3 restaurant,
with its continental feel, attracts far more than hotel guests,
while the woody bar spills out onto a promenade seating area.

Hotel Pelirocco
Take your sunglasses with you when you check into
this seafront townhouse, the arty rock 'n' roll face of Brighton. The Pelirocco is a riot
of color, with rooms all themed around pop culture or personalities: Soul Supreme
(Motown), Ali (Muhammad Ali), Pretty Vacant (Sex Pistols). The
PlayStation bar,
open until 1am Sunday to Thursday, and until 4am at weekends, is a place of brightly
hued cocktails and a clientele to match. The food is just as fun, all cupcakes and
samosa-style nibbles (continental breakfast is an extra charge). It's the ultimate kitsch
weekend break.

Nineteen
One road back from the beach, near the pier, Nineteen is an oasis
of white, punctuated by works from local artists. King rooms have glass-brick platform
beds illuminated by subtle blue lighting. The Courtyard room has a private courtyard
that's a fern jungle with a chemical-free hot tub filled anew for every guest. The classy
continental breakfast (with champagne, buck's fizz, or bloody Mary at weekends) is
served in-room, and there's a kitchen where you can help yourself to coffee and cakes.

Paskins Hotel
This has been an eco-friendly hotel since before that was trendy,
with organic breakfasts, washing towels with soap nut shells and such. The Paskins
is a Victorian townhouse, a couple of streets back from the seafront near the pier.
Inside, Edwardian, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco touches create a rich, arty feel. The
rooms are individually furnished (you can get a four-poster). The full-English break-
fast is a treat, with locally cured bacon and small-batch sausages (they try up to 50
varieties a year), and homemade veggie sausages made from sun-dried tomatoes and
tarragon.
