Duck Inn ENGLISH A historic country pub where the sign above the low door
urges you to “Duck!” The 16th-century building once belonged to the grandmother of
James Bond author Ian Fleming (he wrote the first draft of You Only Live Twice in its
garden, and the place gets a mention). You can dine in the garden, surrounded by
open fields in summer, while the quaint interior is perfect year-round. There's also
simple bed-and-breakfast rooms (£65 double).
Pett Bottom, near Bridge. &   01227/830354. Reservations not necessary. Main courses £8.25-£13.95.
AE, DC, MC, V. Tues-Fri noon-3pm and 6-11pm; Sat-Sun noon-11pm. Drive 5 miles outside Canterbury,
near the village of Bridge on the road to Dover.
The Goods Shed ENGLISH Everything that's good about well-sourced
food you'll find at the Goodsshed, a barn of a market near the station (the restaurant
is on a platform overlooking the action). Meat arrives as whole carcasses in the butch-
ery, there's rustic bread from the bakery, and the daily menu reflects the other pro-
duce on offer. That might mean braised ox cheeks, creamed shallots, and bay leaf, or
Kentish Ranger chicken, prunes, and cobnuts (like a local hazelnut). Breakfast,
lunch, and dinner all adhere to the same high standard, and there are banquets, for
12 or more, for around £35.

£11-£20. AE, MC, V. Tues-Fri 8-10:30am, noon-2:30pm, and 6-9:30pm; Sat 8-10:30am, noon-3pm, and

Shopping
The Goods Shed, Station Road West ( &   01227/459153; www.thegoodsshed.
net), is a massive, ethically sound food market, and while you might not be able to
take home the delectable fresh produce, you'll also find lots of other souvenirs such
as chutneys and mustards. See review above, under “Where to Eat.”
The Chaucer Bookshop, 6-7 Beer Cart Lane ( &   01227/453912; www.chaucer-
bookshop.co.uk), sells first editions (both old and modern), out-of-print books,
leather-bound editions, and a large selection of local history books.
Entertainment & Nightlife
The Old Brewery Tavern, part of the ABode-hotel complex ( &   0871/402-3262;
www.alberrys.co.uk), is an attraction in its own right, with an entrance on Stour
Street. It's a modern take on a pub, all pale wood and white walls, and serves a gas-
tropub innovative-but-casual menu (two courses £9.95). It's a good place for an early
pint, with as much attention paid to the beer selection as the food, while most eve-
nings it turns into a club with DJs (10pm-2am; free entry). The ABode's Michael
Caines Champagne and Cocktail Bar ( &   01227/766266; www.michaelcaines.
com) is sleek and modern, the city's most stylish bar, the place where you can get a
simple glass of fizz or treat yourself to a magnum of the best. A favorite local pub,
Alberry's Wine Bar, 38 St. Margaret's St. ( &   01227/452378; www.alberrys.
co.uk), offers a clubby atmosphere every night with a DJ spinning hip-hop, drum and
bass, or chart music. There's a cover of several pounds after 9pm Tuesday to Thurs-
day, and after 10pm on Friday and Saturday.
