MODERATE
Bath Place Hotel The Bath Place Hotel comprises 17th-century weavers'
cottages converted into a small inn of charm and grace, one of the “secret addresses”
of Oxford. It lies on a cobbled alleyway off Holywell Street in the center of Oxford,
between New College and Hertford College. Flemish weavers built the cottages
around a tiny flagstone courtyard. Completely refurbished to a high standard, the inn
today offers comfortable and well-appointed bedrooms.

Burlington House Hotel This top choice on the edge of town makes up for
the slightly inconvenient location with fabulous service, bargain prices, and immaculate,
boutique-like rooms. Inside, old fittings and fireplaces blend with modern beds and flat-
screen TVs; the power showers are especially welcome. Breakfasts are another highlight,
with high-quality continental and hot items to try (marmalade omelet anyone?). The
hotel sits on Banbury Road near a bus stop with frequent buses into the center (10- or
20-min. walk), and there are plenty of bars and restaurants nearby, too.

INEXPENSIVE
Oxford Backpackers Oxford has three dorm-style hostels, and this one just about
tops the others, though they all offer a fairly typical backpacker experience: Lots of young
people, basic bathrooms (with hot showers), lockers, aging bunks and mattresses, and
noise from the nearby clubs (especially weekends). Breakfast is basic but filling, with
plenty of coffee, juice, bread, and spreads. And the location is handy, between the bus and
the train station. Note that guests must be 18 or older to stay here.

£19 dorm beds. MC, V. Rates include continental breakfast. Reception open daily 8-10am and 5-7pm.

Sandfield Guest House Just off the main road to the M40 and London
(A420) in the student suburb of Headington, friendly hosts Paul and Natália Ander-
son have created a welcoming B&B. It's 10 minutes by bus from central Oxford.
Rooms are well equipped and very comfy—everything is new and spotlessly clean.
(Room no. 3 has a slightly larger bathroom.) The full, cooked English breakfasts are
high quality, very filling, and accompanied by yogurt, cereal, and fresh fruit. Heading-
ton is a pleasant neighborhood in its own right, with shops and a few restaurants
within walking distance.
