George & Davis DESSERT/CAFE This is Oxford's ice-cream headquarters, a
brightly painted cafe serving artisanal homemade ice cream, as well as decent bagels,
with plenty of schmears (cream cheese spreads), cookies, ethically sourced coffees
and teas, and scrumptious cakes. Expect indulgent flavors such as Dime bar crunch,
super chocolate, and golden secret (honeycomb and chocolate in a cream base),

Manos GREEK Even Greek expats end up at this cozy taverna, a sunny place
with great food enhanced by traditional Greek folk songs wafting through the air.
Portions are big, and salads are heavy on the feta cheese, which is always a good sign;
the indomitable Manos himself cooks up a wicked chicken souvlaki (flatbread filled
with marinated grilled chicken or falafel, hummus, tzatziki, and salad), and a mouth-
watering moussaka.

Mission Mexican Grill MEXICAN This place isn't quite on the level of the
taquerías in San Francisco's Mission District (this is England after all), but it's a wor-
thy tribute to Cal-Mex food nonetheless. The burritos here—a specialty—are some
of the best on the island, with high-quality and flavorful meat, beans, sour cream, and
flour tortillas. The carnitas burrito (pork roasted slowly with herbs and orange zest) is
spot on, and makes a tasty meal. The veggie options are also good (it's hard to beat
grilled vegetables, guacamole, and black beans).
8 St. Michael's St. &   01865/202016. www.missionburritos.co.uk. Burritos £5.45-£5.95. MC, V. Sun-
Wed 11am-10pm; Thurs-Sat 11am-11pm. There's another location at 2 King Edward St. &   01865/722020.
Nosebag Restaurant CAFE/HEALTH FOOD Yes, it sometimes is mobbed with
tourists and students, but there's a good reason this is a long-standing local favorite.
It's the most conveniently located cafe in town and serves solid homemade quiches,
curries, casseroles, and lasagnas, all paired with a choice of three salads. Vegetarians
are well catered for here (think sweet-pepper-and-lentil lasagna, and coconut root
vegetable curry). The evening menu is a bit more expensive.
6-8 St. Michael's St. &   01865/721033. www.nosebagoxford.co.uk. Main courses £8.35-£11.50. MC, V.
Mon-Thurs 9:30am-9:30pm; Fri-Sat 9:30am-10pm; Sun 9:30am-8:30pm.
Posh Fish! FISH & CHIPS It's worth taking a bus or taxi around 2 miles out
of the center for this classic Brit treat to take-out or eat in (there's plenty of space).
Huge portions of crispy battered haddock or plaice can be ordered with curry sauce,
beans, mushy peas, and real, thick English chips. Aficionados can also enjoy battered
sausage, kebabs, fish cakes, pies, and a full fry-up (any time of day). There are jacket
potatoes for the (relatively) healthy.
150 London Rd., Headington. &  01865/765894. Main courses £3.50-£6. Daily 11:30am-midnight. Bus
8 or 9: Headington.
