In-Depth Information
Strok's CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH/CONTINENTAL This pricey restaurant,
located near the castle, is Windsor's most elegant, possessing garden terraces, a con-
servatory, and a dining room designed a bit like a greenhouse. For starters, try the
tongue-tingling foie gras parfait. The main courses are all good, but stand-outs
include the goat's cheese tortellini, and wild seabass risotto with roasted peppers,
tiger prawns, and confit of cherry tomato.
Sir Christopher Wren's House Hotel, Thames St., Windsor. &   01753/442422. www.sirchristopherwren.
co.uk. Main courses £15-£27. AE, DC, MC, V. Daily 12:30-2:15pm and 6:30-9:45pm.
Watermans Arms PUB FARE Just over the bridge to Eton, this Tudor pub, built
in 1542, is a firm student favorite. In addition to the real ales from the local Windsor
& Eton Brewery, there's classic pub food: Traditional fish and chips; sausage, onion
gravy, and mash; and traditional English ploughman's. Best of all is the beef and
Guinness pie. Special English roast dinners, including beef and lamb, are offered on
Sunday, costing £8.95.
Brocas St., Eton. &   01753/861001. www.watermans-eton.com. Main courses £6.50-£12. MC, V. Daily
11:30am-11:30pm.
IN BRAY
The Fat Duck CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH The buzz continues at the
home of master chef Heston Blumenthal, and for once the hype really is justified
(three Michelin stars and voted Best Restaurant in the World in 2005!). Who said
that ice cream can't be made of crab, or that mashed potatoes can't be mixed with
lime jelly? The snail porridge is a tasty sensation, equaled by the salmon poached in
licorice and powdered Anjou pigeon. It's all quite simply astounding. Finish your meal
with whiskey wine gums and feel good that the huge wad of cash you've just blown
was well worth it (the tasting menu is your only option).
1 High St., Bray. &   01628/580333. www.thefatduck.co.uk. Reservations required. £160 tasting menu.
AE, DC, DISC, MC, V. Tues-Sat noon-2pm and 7-9:30pm, Sun noon-2pm. Leave the motorway at exit
4. On the roundabout, take the exit to Maidenhead (A404M/M4) and follow the dual carriageway to the
roundabout at the M4. Take the 1st left exit to Maidenhead Central. At the 2nd roundabout, take the exit
to Bray and Windsor (A308). Continue a half-mile and turn left at the sign to Bray Village (B3028). After
entering the village, continue past the bottleneck; the Fat Duck is on the right adjacent to the Hinds
Head Hotel.
Waterside Inn CONTEMPORARY FRENCH Yet another Michelin three-
star winner in this tiny village, helmed by the indomitable Roux brothers and Belgian
head chef Fabrice Uhryn. The beautifully crafted food will blow you away: Fillets of
sole are filled with a soft scallop and herb mousse wrapped in a spinach leaf, Dieppe-
style sauce with mussels and brown shrimps; while grilled rabbit fillets are served on
a celeriac fondant, with glazed chestnuts and Armagnac sauce. The set menus (from
£42) are the best value, but if you want to splurge it doesn't get much better than the
tasting menu (£140), an epic six-course culinary adventure.
Ferry Rd., Bray. &   01628/620691. www.waterside-inn.co.uk. Reservations recommended. Main
courses £49-£58; set menu £42 for 2 courses (Wed-Fri), £57 for 3 courses (Wed-Sat), £72 for 3 courses
