In-Depth Information
time at St. John Bread & Wine (p. 143) shows in a menu that takes in potted crab
as well as grilled ox heart and roast quail with that most British (but underused) med-
dler jelly for starters, and moves onto mains of pot-roast duck leg and fennel, or
devilled lamb's kidneys and mash. The regulars of Notting Hill have taken this offal-
heavy restaurant to their heart.

Inexpensive
Mandalay BURMESE This cramped, family-run cafe is still the only Burmese
restaurant in London, drawing a mix of students, locals, and those in the know. The
menu takes in influences from China, India, and Thailand too, so you can combine
shrimp and vegetable spring rolls; samosas and fritters; as well as spicy lamb curry,
sweet-and-sour chicken, and shrimps with bamboo shoots. The small kitchen turns
out the dishes with remarkable skill, particularly given the size of the menu. The
drinks list is short.

NOTTING HILL

The Ledbury EUROPEAN Australian-born Brett Graham has now earned
two Michelin stars at this sophisticated neighborhood restaurant. With an inventive
approach to ingredients and taste combinations that show true Aussie innovation, he
produces dishes like flamegrilled mackerel with smoked eel, mustard, and shiso
(Japanese mint) as a starter and grouse in season cooked in lapsang souchong tea with
prunes, walnut milk, and mushrooms for a main dish. This is adventurous stuff—and
in lesser hands could be a disaster. Here it is some of the best cooking around, and
he's just as good at the desserts.

Moderate
Le Café Anglais MODERN BRITISH This is a grand brasserie in feel
with huge windows, high ceilings, and banquette seating, located in Whiteleys
shopping center. There's also a glamorous all-day cafe and oyster bar, ideal for
those seeking an elegant light snack between buying posh frocks. There are plenty
of classics on the menu, like Parmesan custard and anchovy toast for a starter and
any of the excellent game dishes. With its long menu, set menus, children's meals
and parties, and friendly welcome, Le Café Anglais works hard to create the atmo-
sphere of a neighborhood restaurant and succeeds; this is a restaurant that pleases
everyone.
