formation of neurites was established after treatment with retinoic acid at a
concentration of 10
M during 1 and 5 days (Fig. 11.15b and 11.15c). The cells,
treated with BDNF, seem to have more rounded shapes, approaching those of
undifferentiated SH-SY5Y cells (Fig. 11.15d). Very long and branched neurites
were observed when the neuroblastoma cells were treated with functionalized
lipid nanocarrier systems as well as with BDNF alone. The latter fi nding is
consistent with the literature reports (Matsumoto et al., 1995). The treatments
with lipid nanocarriers at a concentration of 4
μ
1 0 − 7 M do not seem to affect
the cells morphology (Figs. 11.15e, 11.15f, and 11.15g), which confi rms the
nontoxic character of the lipid formulations as demonstrated by the performed
MTT tests.

CONCLUSION
The investigated mixed lipid liquid crystalline NP systems were found to
involve two populations of nanoobjects that were interpreted as coexisting
small vesicles and multicompartment particles (cubosomes). Structural transi-
tions of the cubosomes were favored at increasing molar fractions of the nega-
tively charged fatty acid components. The formulations MO/DOPE-PEG 2000 /
OA/EPA appeared to be more stable on storage and on dilution when they
were functionalized by 15 mol % of EPA. In vitro tests under confocal fl uo-
rescent microscope showed the differentiation of the neuroblastoma
