In-Depth Information
Carolines on Broadway Caroline Hirsch presents national
headliners in her upscale Theater District showroom, which doesn't
have a bad seat in the house. You're bound to recognize at least one
or two of the established names and hot up-and-comers any given
week, like Dave Chapelle, Janeane Garofalo, Colin Quinn, Bill Bel-
lamy, Kathy Griffin, Jimmie Walker (“Dyn-o-mite!”), Pauly Shore,
or Jay Mohr. Monday is usually New Talent Night, while HOT97
radio hosts up-and-coming black comedians on select Tuesdays. 1626
Broadway (btwn 49th & 50th sts.). & 212/757-4100. www.carolines.com. Sub-
way: N, R to 49th St.; 1 to 50th St.
Comedy Cellar This subterranean club is the venue of
choice for stand-up fans in the know, thanks to the most consistently
impressive lineups in the business. I'll always love the Comedy Cel-
lar for introducing an uproariously funny unknown named Ray
Romano to me some years back. 117 MacDougal St. (btwn Bleecker & W. 3rd
sts.). & 212/254-3480. www.comedycellar.com. Subway: A, B, C, D, E, F, V to W. 4th
St. (use 3rd St. exit).

DOWNTOWN
Church Lounge The big, super-stylish Larry Bogdanow-designed
atrium-lobby bar and restaurant at the Tribeca Grand Hotel is a great
place to enjoy a top-flight cocktail and rub elbows with the neigh-
borhood's chic locals (which include just about anybody who has
business with Miramax). Dress well and call ahead to see what's on
tap that evening if you want to experience the height of the action—
around 11pm. 2 Sixth Ave. (at White & Church sts.). & 212/519-6600. Subway:
1 to Franklin St.; A, C, E to Canal St.
Ear Inn There are many debates about which is the oldest bar
in New York, and with its 1870s origins, Ear Inn is a serious con-
tender for that crown. In super-chic SoHo, this pub is a welcome
cranky relief. They pull an excellent pint of Guinness and make a
surprisingly good margarita as well. On Saturday afternoon the
poetry readings just might make you cry into your beer. In warm
weather, tables are set up outside within exhaust distance of the
nearby UPS depot. Note: Respect the no-cellphone policy or suffer
the consequences. 326 Spring St. (btwn Greenwich & Washington sts.). & 212/
226-9060. Subway: C, E to Spring St.
