In-Depth Information
The purpose of this chapter has been to encourage recognition not only
of family diversity in a tourism context but also the social and economic
benefits of accommodating the needs of diverse families. Recognition and
accommodation of the diverse nature of the family tourism market is highly
likely to attract significant economic returns for operators, despite the
prevailing economic climate. Consideration of the characteristics of genera-
tions X and Y presents the tourism industry with a number of challenges
which they must face in order to meet the needs of these consumers from
the perspective of participation in family tourism. These challenges include
the search for authenticity, bridging the gap between the technologically
savvy and those who are less so, provision for 'soft' and 'hard' adventure
seekers and integration of opportunities for enhancement of family values
within value-for-money tourism propositions.
