In-Depth Information
gaps in current knowledge have been recognised, alongside emerging
trends. Suggestions for future research have been made. Nine main themes
have been identified that provide steerage for the future major tourism
market that families will represent. From these contributions it is evident
that understanding of families is vital for future industry developments.
However, the authors are aware that we have managed to cover only some
of the current research developments in this topic and would suggest the
following areas for further research:
• the Asian family market as a representation of the rising middle classes
in Asia;
• a detailed examination of the single-parent family market;
• the travel behaviours of families from ethnic or indigenous backgrounds;
• differentiation in the understanding of children on holiday as repre-
sented by age and gender;
• a detailed examination of multigenerational differences and needs in
family travel;
• further analysis of the supply side of family tourism, with tourism
operator perspectives on catering for the family market;
• the economic impact on tourism of changes to family structures and
forms.
In addition, it is recognised that each one of the clusters in the cognitive map
require further study. We hope that you have enjoyed reading the various
chapters in this topic, which demonstrate the application of the study of
families to tourism.
