the need for better linking between what families need and what tourism
operators provide, in order to reduce stress for families (their main purpose
of holidaying).
Chapter 9 - Gay and Lesbian Family Travel
This chapter considered the potential for gay and lesbian family tourism
in respect to market size, disposable income and particular requirements
(Figure 12.8). It emphasised the contested nature of gay and lesbian
marriage, which can lead to added stress and lack of acknowledgement from
tourism providers. 'The gay and lesbian family holiday' has particularly
significant potential for strengthening and consolidating sexual identities
and family relationships but its market size is difficult to identify, due to
a lack of empirical data. Gay and lesbian families may avoid commercial
providers in order to obtain privacy and avoid tension but may not desire a
separate product either. The key contribution of this chapter is highlighting
the challenges of the tourism industry to overcome the fears and concerns
of gay and lesbian families and tap into the needs of this growing market.
