time based on social connectedness and freedom from family responsibilities
based on pursuing all family members' own interests.
Chapter 6 - VFR Travel
Despite the decade-long trend in declining domestic holidays in Australia,
this chapter argued that the proportion of people undertaking VFR travel
has increased in the majority of destinations in Victoria. This supports
the notion that the VFR market may be an appropriate choice to assist
in 'buffering' against economic downturns, especially when coupled with
natural disasters and a strong exchange rate. The conceptual map (Figure
12.5) highlights that destinations may need to consider developing VFR
strategies such as marketing to 'Aunt Betty' or local hosts, particularly with
recessionary conditions, increased social media exposure and greater avail-
ability of international travel options. The key contribution was outlining
the long-term robustness of the VFR market, as not only is reconnecting
with family and friends socially important but also people will always
travel to reconnect. In addition, VFR will have a growing role in terms of
migration and possibly inbound international travel to Australia. Further
