Chapter 2. Designing Your First Data
Objects and Reports
In the first chapter, we introduced Oracle BAM key concepts and its architecture.
You may have found these topics to be quite abstract and complex, so to help so-
lidify your understanding of these important concepts, and gain some experience
with the development of BAM applications, we will guide you through the steps to
build your first Data Object and report, and start sharing tips and tricks for build-
ing BAM applications.
In this chapter, you will first learn how to design your first Data Object, including
Data Object design considerations, creating Data Objects, adding lookup fields,
and creating external Data Objects. Then, you will learn how to create a single
View report, based on the Data Objects you created.
In order to demonstrate the best practices for building BAM applications, we have
developed samples, which can be found in the topic's samples folder. As each
chapter may use its own sample code and data, we recommend that you follow
the instructions carefully in the README.txt file associated with every sample.
The prerequisites for running BAM samples are as follows:
Download and install Oracle SOA Suite (11.1.1.4 or later release).
Download and install Oracle JDeveloper (11.1.1.4 or later release). Ensure
that the JDeveloper release matches the SOA Suite.
Ensure that you have installed Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) browser (7.0
or later release) on your host OS.
Designing your first Data Objects
As you saw in the BAM key concepts section, in the previous chapter, BAM Data
Objects represent data models, which are used to create reports in Oracle BAM
