The Keys are an ecological anomaly in the USA, a series of mangrove islands that conceal
hammocks (groves) of palm, pine and tropical hardwoods found nowhere else in the coun-
try (and in some cases, the world).
Authors & Artists
Thanks largely to its historical toleration of the homosexual community, the Keys (espe-
cially Key West) have long been an artist colony. Authors, from Hemingway to Frost, have
been attracted to the island and its piratical, creative cast as well.
Fish & Mango Salsa
Folks here are mad for fishing and the natural culinary accompaniment to said hobby. If
the fish you eat here isn't fresh, there's something wrong. Land food exists as well, of
course, accompanied by tropical garnishes and the famous Key lime pie.
