Regions at a Glance
Miami is the urban heart of this region, filled with the best dining, nightlife and shop-
ping - plus, of course, some very fine beaches. In the past, travelers gravitated to
Miami Beach over Miami, but today the city on the mainland can give the beach a
run for its money when it comes to culture (and it has always been a bit more cos-
mopolitan). The Everglades are a wet wilderness filled with some of the best
wildlife-spotting in Florida, along with pools, rivers and lakes that constrict and ex-
pand with the moon and tides, and nearby funky roadside attractions. The islands
of the Florida Keys are particularly good for idiosyncratic attractions, tasty dining,
fun bars, tolerance and diversity, as exemplified by Key West.
