In-Depth Information
Saturday and 10am to 1am Sunday and holidays. Look for official bus stops every couple of
blocks, marked by posts with colorful Electrowave signs.
Coral Gables has its own new shuttle in the form of a hybrid-electric bus disguised as a
trolley. It's free, but only really good for getting around the Gables. The north-south route
runs along Ponce de León Blvd from the Douglas Metrorail Station to SW 8th St (between
6:30am and 8pm Monday to Thursday, and 6:30am and 10pm Friday).
KEY WEST
Key West Transit ( % 305-809-3910; www.kwtransit.com ; single fare $2) operates a local bus
service on Key West. The bus line connects the western, historical half of the island to the
residential units and strip malls of eastern Key West. This is primarily a utility service for is-
land residents who work on the west half of Key West and do not have the means to drive
there.
If you're a tourist, KW Transit's more useful service is the Lower Keys Shuttle ; see
www.keywestcity.com and look under departments, then Department of Transportation.
This commuter bus service runs between Key West and Marathon nine times a day; fare is
just $3. From Marathon you can connect to the 301 Dade-Monroe Express ($2.35) , oper-
ated by Dade County, which connects Marathon to Florida City six times a day; see
www.miamidade.gov/transit for a detailed schedule. This route works in the opposite direc-
tion as well, which means you can feasibly take public buses from Florida City all the way
to Key West. Just plan on a long day; for example, if you left from Key West airport at
12:21pm, you'd reach Mile Marker 50 in Marathon at 2pm. Then you'd have to wait till the
301 leaves from MM 50 at 3:45pm, landing you in Florida City at 6pm.
Metro
In Miami, the driverless Metromover ( www.miami dade.gov/transit/mover) circles down-
town and connects with Metrorail ( www.miamidade.gov/transit/rail ) . It is a 21-mile-long
heavy rail system that has one elevated line running from Hialeah through downtown Miami
and south to Kendall/Dadeland. Trains run every five to 15 minutes from 6am to midnight.
The fare is $2, or $1 with a Metromover transfer. An extension of the Metrorail from Miami
proper to the airport is being planned.
The regional Tri-Rail train connects Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. Fares are
calculated on a zone basis, and the route spans six zones. No tickets are sold on the train,
so allow time to make your purchase before boarding. All trains and stations are accessible
to riders with disabilities. The Tri-Rail website has a list of stations.
