If you park illegally or if the meter runs out, parking fines are about $25 to $50, but a tow
could cost a lot more. Other useful parking garages can be found in Coral Gables and Co-
conut Grove.
Street meters in Miami Beach south of 23rd street are $1.50 per hour and need to be fed
from 9am to 3am. North of 23rd St meters cost $1 per hour and operate from 8am to 6pm.
Most meters allow you to pay for up to three hours, although some have increased that
range. Many meter machines include a credit-card option; failing that, you can purchase a
Meter Card, available from the Miami Beach City Hall ( GOOGLE MAP ; 1st fl, 1700 Convention
Center Dr) ; the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce ; any municipal parking lot or any Publix
grocery store. Denominations come in $10, $20 and $25 (and meters cost $1 per hour).
Rental
CAR
Car rental is very competitive. Most rental companies require that you have a major credit
card, that you be at least 25 years old and that you have a valid driver's license (your home
license will do but an IDP is recommended). Some national companies may rent to drivers
between the ages of 21 and 24 for an additional charge. Those under 21 are usually not
permitted to rent at all.
Car Rental Express ( www.carrentalexpress.com ) rates and compares independent agen-
cies in US cities; it's particularly useful for searching out cheaper long-term rentals.
