In-Depth Information
Bus
Greyhound is the major carrier in and out of Miami. The major terminals are Airport termin-
al; North Miami terminal; and the Miami Cutler Bay terminal. Megabus picks up from Miami
International Airport and 600 NE 1st Ave downtown.
Car & Motorcycle
The easiest and most popular way to travel around South Florida is by car. While it's pos-
sible to avoid using a car on single-destination trips to Miami or Key West, relying on public
transit is inconvenient for even limited regional touring. Motorcycles are also popular in
Florida, given the flat roads and warm weather (summer rain excepted). In addition, motor-
ized transport is practically a must to explore the Everglades. Greyhound buses run
through the Keys, but you can't pull over and smell the roses by the side of the Overseas
Highway, which is 90% of the fun.
Roads are well-kept and maintained, with the exception of the occasional pothole and
construction site in Miami, and the muddy Loop Rd in the Everglades (which was being im-
proved at the time of research).
Automobile Associations
The American Automobile Association (AAA; % 800-874-7532; www.aaa.com ) has reciproc-
al agreements with several international auto clubs (check with AAA and bring your mem-
bership card). For members, AAA offers travel insurance, tour bookings, diagnostic centers
for used-car buyers, a greater number of regional offices, and it advocates politically for the
auto industry.
An ecofriendly alternative is the Better World Club which donates 1% of earnings to as-
sist environmental cleanup, offers ecologically sensitive choices for services and advocates
politically for environmental causes. Better World also has a roadside assistance program
for bicycles.
In both organizations, the central member benefit is 24-hour emergency roadside assist-
ance anywhere in the USA. Both clubs offer trip planning and free maps, travel agency ser-
vices, car insurance and a range of discounts (car rentals, hotels etc).
